Borough President Brewer Nixes Lenox Terrace Rezoning
Ahead of Wednesday’s vote on the matter by the City Planning Commission, Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer gave a thumbs-down to the rezoning proposed by the Olnick Organization for its Lenox Terrace complex in Harlem.
Brewer rejected the proposal, which sought to add five 28-story mixed-use buildings to the complex, because it came without adequate public and private investments.
“There are few instances where a development the scale of the one proposed by Lenox Terrace Development Associates can be viewed as responsible,” said Brewer.
“This proposal promises to change the physical and socioeconomic character of Central Harlem while ignoring the concerns of stakeholders and urban planners in the community, and as a result I must urge that the proposal as written be rejected.”
Olnick developed Lenox Terrace in 1958. The rezoning would add 1,600 apartments to the complex, including 1,200 at market rate.
