Boehner’s Exit Means Shutdown Uncertainty
House Speaker John Boehner’s exit from Congress could mean that a government shutdown is more likely, and the Export-Import Bank could also close as a result. Another issue on the table is whether or not Congress and the White House can come to terms on a new borrowing method to pay for road and bridge maintenance.
Government observers seem to think that a stopgap bill will be passed from Oct. 1 to Dec. 11. But after that, it is uncertain what will happen, due to Boehner’s exit. The long-time representative out of Ohio was known for being a politician who could work well on both sides of the Congressional aisle. If Republicans choose a more confrontational House Speaker upon Boehner’s exit, one who may be determined not to pass the budget due to Planned Parenthood funding or another issue, a government shutdown could take place in December.
