Bechtel Relocating HQ to DC Area After 100+ Years in California

Bechtel Group, one of San Francisco most storied firms with more than a century of history in the city, is moving its “official” corporate headquarters to Reston, VA by the end of the year. The privately-held company’s San Francisco HQ encompasses about 150,000 square feet at 50 Beale St., where 150 employees are based.

The international engineering, construction and project management firm’s “global operational headquarters” have been housed in Reston since 2011. The company leases more than 225,000 square feet in Boston Properties’ Reston Overlook, at 12011 Sunset Hills Rd. where chairman and CEO Brendan Bechtel is based, along with roughly 1,300 employees.

Bechtel President and COO Jack Futcher (pictured) told the Washington Post, “Over the last 15 years, the customer base that supported our San Francisco office has diminished, and as a consequence the employee population in San Francisco diminished because the customers moved to other locations.”

In recent decades, Bechtel’s business has increased in Houston and the DC area, with work in oil and gas construction services, management of nuclear facilities and government contracting.
