Austin’s Growth Creating Construction Shortages

Austin’s growth has landed the metro on several “fastest-growing,” “top-10” lists. But the growth is also creating issues, such as traffic congestion – and scarce construction labor. With building permits increasing by more than 25% in the past six years, and the number of construction workers jumping by more than 27%, there still doesn’t seem to be enough labor to go around. Many construction sites don’t have skilled laborers who require certifications or licensing before they can perform a job.

Steven Burch with White Construction Co. told Community Impact that prices are going up, especially for subcontract workers, and more money attracts the workers. “When there’s more demand than there is supply, subcontractors can raise the price, and they can be ultra-selective about who they do business with,” he added.
