Armed Guards Protect State Street Businesses, Patrons
Two armed security guards began patrolling State Street in the Loop, aiming to more quickly respond to incidents and retail crimes.
The Chicago Loop Alliance closed a contract with HLSA Security, which is providing the guards. They will have guns and badges, and will be able to make arrests. Patrols will take place eight hours per day on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, with hours increasing in May.
The patrols will monitor State Street between Wacker Drive and Congress Parkway.
“By hiring security guards to help patrol the Loop, the Chicago Loop Alliance is ensuring downtown residents and businesses will benefit from having more law enforcement professionals on the street,” 42nd Ward Alderman Brendan Reilly said in a statement.
The guards will respond to incidents during and after festivals, sporting events and protests, as well as to crimes inside the stores and offices that dominate the area.
