Approved: $65M Echo East Mixed-Use Development
The San Antonio City Council approved the sale of 10 acres of land to the George Gervin Youth Center. The center, in turn, is planning a $65-million-mixed-use development dubbed Echo East. The project would include 500 residential units and 25,000 square feet of retail, making it one of the largest constructions on San Antonio’s East Side since the AT&T Center opened nearby in 2002.
The land at East Commerce Street and Spriggsdale Boulevard sold for $430,000. Also involved was a $450,000 economic development grant being used to pay for the land and closing costs. Meanwhile, state representative Barbara Gervin-Hawkins, who is partnering with Foremost Development on the project, said it could be a way to bring jobs and decent housing to the economically depressed East Side. She has been trying to develop the site for close to 20 years.
