Approval for Bedford Union Armory Plan

After months of argument, a plan to redevelop the Bedford Union Armory into a mix of 400 apartments and recreational space is finally going forward in Brooklyn’s Crown Heights neighborhood. The City Council approved the plan Nov. 30, 2017.

“Over the past four years, we have proudly worked with Council Member Cumbo and the Crown Heights community to redevelop a vacant armory into a center of opportunity for this neighborhood,” said James Patchett, president of the City’s Economic Development Corp.

Advocates for affordable housing protested earlier versions of the plan that had included luxury condominiums. Under the final version, the city will keep ownership of the 138,000-square-foot Armory, and will prohibit the sale of condominiums at unrestricted market prices.

Redevelopment will create:

– 250 homes for families earning less than $50,000 year, including formerly homeless New Yorkers.

– State-of-the art recreation center affordable to community residents.

– Low-cost space for local nonprofits, and a new medical facility for uninsured New Yorkers.
