Apple Exploring Options at Surprise AZ Chrysler Proving Grounds

Apple Inc. is kicking the tires on a former 5,500-acre Fiat Chrysler-owned proving grounds in Surprise, AZ as a potential autonomous vehicle testing site. Sources say the tech giant is recruiting automotive test engineers and technicians in Arizona.

A development group involving an affiliate of New York-based iStar Inc., which owns the Surprise proving grounds, and Route 14 Investment Partners LLC, is moving forward on a development agreement with the city for the site located north of Loop 303 on Grand Avenue. In 2005, Chrysler sold the proving grounds for $312 million to iStar, which planned to build 16,500 homes there. The city subsequently annexed the land, though the housing community was never built.

Metro Phoenix is home to auto proving grounds for manufacturers and other companies including Ford, General Motors, Waymo, Uber and Intel Corp.
