Apollo Acquiring Smart & Final Again in $1.1B Deal
Commerce, CA-based Smart & Final Stores, Inc. entered into a definitive merger agreement with certain investment funds managed by affiliates of Apollo Global Management, LLC in a deal valued at roughly $1.12 billion. The Apollo Funds will acquire all the outstanding shares of Smart & Final’s common stock for $6.50 per share in cash.
Smart & Final’s Kenneth Tuchman says, “Our board, with the assistance of independent financial and legal advisors, determined that this transaction, upon closing, will deliver immediate, significant and certain cash value to our stockholders.”
The nearly 150-year-old value-oriented food and everyday staples retailer was previously owned by Apollo from 2007 to 2012 before its sale to Ares Management, L.P. in November 2012. It is seeking to gain Apollo’s strategic guidance in order to help it accelerate an existing strategy.
