Another Apartment Owner Jailed: Daniel Melamed Gets 20 Days at Rikers

Brooklyn real estate developer Daniel Melamed was locked up January 25, 2018, after State Supreme Court Justice Danny Chun ordered him to serve 20 days at Rikers. It may just be the beginning for Melamed, who is facing sentencing Feb. 14, 2018 for his conviction in June on three counts of unlawful eviction of rent-stabilized tenants.

The conviction is part of an effort by city and state officials to crack down on real estate investors who buy rent-stabilized apartment and pressure the existing residents to leave so that they can raise the rents.

“Daniel Melamed swindled taxpayers and harassed tenants in order to line his own pockets. Now he’s in jail,” said New York State Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman (pictured).

Melamed also faces sentencing for a long series of fraudulent transactions. He pled guilty to a 13-count indictment in November 2017.
