Anaheim, Santa Ana Now Renter-Majority Towns
Two Orange County cities, Anaheim and Santa Ana, now have more renters than homeowners. Research by RentCafe found that 22 large U.S. cities experienced stunning growth in renters over the past decade, and are now considered renter-majority.
U.S. Census Bureau data shows people living in rentals increased by 23 million from 2006 to 2016, while 700,000 more people are living in homes they owned. When comparing the 100 most-populous U.S. cities in 2016, 42 had more renters than owners. In 2006, 20 cities had more. Over the decade, the share of renters grew in 97 of 100 big cities.
Anaheim saw its renter population soar to 200,424 renters in 2016, the 43rd highest of 100 large U.S. cities, which represented 57.9% of the population. While in Santa Ana, 186,433 rented, representing 56.6% of its population. That ranked 49th nationally and was up from 26% in 2006.
