An Aging Population: What it Means for Texas

The Harvard Joint Center for Housing Studies just released its “Housing America’s Older Adults 2018” report, and the news isn’t all that great. In a nutshell, the report notes that more than half of U.S. households are now headed by someone age 50 years or older. The study also shows that the United States isn’t prepared, nor does it have the resources, to house an aging population.

What does this mean for Texas? When it came to the major metros, the share of the population age 65 and older is, on average, no higher than 10%-14%, at present.

At least, for the most part. In some census tracts within Austin, Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston and San Antonio, the share of population age 65 and older has grown, as seen in the chart, below.
