Amazon Wind Farm Suppliers Want to Expand

Avangrid, headquartered in Portland OR, finally has its $400-million, 104-turbine wind farm running in North Carolina, and supplying power to Seattle retailer Amazon. The wind farm comes online following years of litigation and construction. And now, Avangrid wants to develop more in the Tar Heel State.

Avangrid is analyzing other opportunities in North Carolina. Jesse Gronner, Avangrid’s vice president of development, told the Puget Sound Business Journal that the company wants to expand the current site by 30 to 50 turbines.

But getting that approval could be a problem. Perquimans County, one of two on which the Amazon wind farm rests, rejected a permit application for another utility scale project, citing aesthetics and property value concerns. “This being the first utility-scale wind project in North Carolina, it’s really blazing a new trail, and that makes it much more of a challenge – but we’re proud to be the first ones to do it,” Gronner said.
