Amarillo Moves One Step Closer to Ballpark

The city of Amarillo, TX began demolition on an old Coca-Cola plant at 701 S. Lincoln. The removal of the 75,000-square-foot plant is expected to last about 8-10 weeks, and the city hopes it can entice a Major League Baseball-affiliated team to make a home there.

The city has yet to nail down a contract with a team, but Amarillo mayor Paul Harpole indicated there are “multiple possibilities.” In the meantime, construction has been underway on three projects nearby, including an Embassy Suites Convention Hotel, a garage and office building, and retail space.

However, once the demotion of the Coca-Cola plant is completed, the lot will be seeded and remain vacant until a baseball contract is in place, or until the city comes up with another plan. To meet the proposed 2018 “opening day” timeline, the city would need to have a contract in place by the end of this year.
