Air Quality on 2020 Agenda for Los Angeles Ports

The Ports of Los Angeles in Long Beach and San Pedro together see approximately 40% of the nation’s imports pass through their terminals each year, on the way to local, regional and national markets from the preferred port of entry for Pacific Rim trading partners.

As sustainability initiatives drive new development, redevelopment and operations of logistics intensive operators in the Southern California industrial commercial real estate markets, the focus on air quality and mitigating impacts of the industry have become paramount considerations for Port operations.

The Los Angeles Times recently reported on a significant demand for infrastructure investments to create a workable solution for air quality officials who want to expand the number of ships that, while docked, must either shut down their auxiliary engines and plug into shore power, or scrub their exhaust by hooking up to machines known as bonnets or “socks on a stack.”
