Aetna Exploring HQ Relocation to Boston or NY

Aetna confirmed that it is exploring a headquarters relocation from Hartford, CT, its home for 164 years. The insurance giant is negotiating with other states, including Massachusetts and New York, with a decision expected early this summer.

The company is seeking a location closer to talent in the knowledge economy, as part of its growth strategy in the digital area and to bring new innovations to market. The two front-running cities competing for a space requirement believed to be in the 150,000-square-foot range are Boston and New York.

The company says if it does move its HQ, it will have a “minimal impact” on the “vast majority” of its people in Hartford. The new facility would be home to a few hundred associates, including new hires and existing leadership slated to relocate over time.

Aetna’s total employment is 49,500 with 5,000 in Connecticut.
