AECOM Converting Memphis Retail Center to COVID-19 Hospital
AECOM has been selected by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to convert space at Gateway Shopping Center in Memphis into a temporary hospital. The Los Angeles-based developer will transform roughly 100,000 square feet at the west end of the center into a facility with up to 350 hospital beds.
AECOM’s $12.4-million bid was selected by the Department of Defense. The site was chosen due to its proximity to three existing hospitals. The facility will be used for non-acute care patients, and would potentially save capacity at existing area hospitals. Memphis is expected to need 2,400 ICU beds to deal with the COVID-19 pandemic, though it currently has just 600.
AECOM is also supporting the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), New York District, to transform a university facility on Long Island into a temporary medical facility with more than 1,000 beds. The alternate care facility at the State University of New York, College at Old Westbury, will help ease the strain on existing medical facilities during the coronavirus pandemic.
