Abilene City Council Approves Contract for New Police HQ

The Abilene City Council approved a contract with Collier Construction to renovate a former Kmart and adjacent retail property on South First Street into a new police headquarters. The project will cost approximately $17.3 million, and will include space for 911 dispatch, a child advocacy center and the Abilene Municipal Services Center.

The city acquired the shuttered 62,000-square-foot Kmart in late 2017, along with additional property that made up the old Westgate Shopping Center at 4565 S. First St. The property had formerly housed a Winn-Dixie grocer and Mattress World, along with the Kmart, which shut down in late 2016.

A completion time for the project is not yet known, though reports say that the municipal services center of the development should be ready by the end of 2018.
