AbbVie Donates $40M to Rebuild North Chicago Middle School

Biopharmaceutical firm AbbVie is donating $40 million to rebuild the middle school in its hometown, the Lake County suburb of North Chicago, IL. The rebuilding will increase the size of Neal Math & Science Academy slightly from 89,000 square feet to 93,000, supporting up to 625 students.

AbbVie selected IFF to facilitate the project. The Chicago-based real estate consultant and developer works with nonprofits to plan, finance and build their facilities.

John Price, superintendent for North Chicago Community Unit School District 187, said AbbVie has demonstrated “a longstanding commitment to supporting and investing in North Chicago. Today’s donation will enable us to provide an updated space for students that is conducive to collaborative learning and helps improve student outcomes.”

The current school dates from the 1960s, and reportedly suffers from outdated plumbing and electrical systems. Groundbreaking on the new facility is expected for 2020, with a summer 2021 opening projected.
