Abbott to Lawmakers: You’re Coming Back
Texas Governor Greg Abbott called for a special section of the Texas Legislature to meet starting July 18, 2017. The governor’s mandate followed the conclusion of the 85th Legislature, which was marred by bickering and unresolved debates over issues ranging from property tax relief to bathroom bills.
According to a press conference on June 6, 2017, Abbott asked lawmakers to first pass key legislation that would prevent some state agencies from closing. That would be the only legislation during the special session, until it passes out of the Senate, in full, Abbott said.
The Governor also introduced 19 items which he would ask legislators to take up, which includes the controversial “bathroom bill,” that would regulate what restrooms transgendered individuals can use. “We need a law that protects the privacy of our children in public schools,” Abbott said.
