Abbott Doesn’t Plan a Second Shutdown Despite “Unacceptable” COVID Cases

Although he called Texas’ rising number of COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations “unacceptable,” Gov. Greg Abbott said Monday that he has no plans to shut down the state again. Instead, Abbott called on Texans to do their part to stop the spread of the coronavirus, the Austin American-Statesman reported.

“We must find ways to return to our daily routines, as well as finding ways to coexist with COVID-19,” Abbott said in a news conference. “Closing down Texas again will always be the last option.”

His remarks came a day after Texas set its 10th consecutive record for COVID-19 hospitalizations. While noting that hospitalizations have more than doubled since Memorial Day, Abbott insisted that Texas hospitals can manage the current increase.

“If we were to experience another doubling of those numbers over the next month, that would mean we are in an urgent situation,” leading to new restrictions statewide, Abbott said.
