“Light” Building Headed to HDRC Review

San Antonio’s Historic and Design Review Commission (HDRC) will be considering a proposal to revamp a six-decade-old building into a mixed-use office and retail complex. The facility in question, at 420 Broadway St., once held the San Antonio Light newspaper offices. GrayStreet Partners acquired the 70,000-square-foot building in late 2016 from Hearst Corp., and will be submitting the design concepts to the HDRC. The Light folded in 1993.

GrayStreet is calling the renovation “The Light Project,” partly as homage to the former newspaper, and partly from architect ford, powell & carson’s plans, which replaces brick facades with light-gathering windows and glass curtains. GrayStreet’s plans for the property include 60,000 square feet of Class A office space by spring 2018.
