88 Buildings to Go Up in NYC’s $17B Schools Capital Plan
Schools chancellor Richard Carranza and the School Construction Authority plan to spend $17 billion over the next five years to reduce overcrowding at the city’s public schools. The 2020-2024 schools capital plan, the largest ever proposed in New York, would add 88 school buildings and about 57,000 seats.
These new investments will allow more families to send their kids to Pre-K and 3-K, improve building accessibility, and accelerate the installation of air conditioning in schools across the city,” said Mayor Bill de Blasio. “These investments are critical to helping our students achieve success in the classroom and beyond.”
Along with $8.8 billion toward increasing capacity, the capital plan allocates $750 million toward improved internet bandwidth in city schools, and an additional $650 million towards lab upgrades, cafeteria, kitchens and emergency repairs.
The capital plan has been submitted for public comment, and the City Council will vote on it in 2019.
