32BJ President Héctor Figueroa Dies at 57

Labor leader Héctor Figueroa, president of the country’s largest property services union, died suddenly of a heart attack on July 11. The head of Local 32BJ of the Service Employees International Union was 57.

Figueroa was elected president of 32BJ, which has some 163,000 members nationwide, in 2012. New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo credited Figueroa with helping his administration enact a statewide minimum wage of $15 per hour.

In recent months, Figueroa was an enthusiastic supporter of Amazon’s plans to build a second headquarters campus in Long Island City. When Amazon scrapped those plans last February, he called it “a lost opportunity for Queens and New York on many levels.”

New York Building Congress President Carlo A. Scissura cited the “incredible impact” that Figueroa had on the building industry. “Héctor Figueroa was a giant not only in the New York City labor industry, but across the country,” Scissura said.
