227-Bed Christus St. Mary Hospital be Shuttered, Demolished
Christus Southeast Texas Health System announced that its 227-bed Christus St. Mary Hospital in Port Arthur, TX, will be shuttered within 45 days, and torn down to make way for green space. Hospital executives cited declining use of the facility at 3600 Gates Blvd., as well as shifting city demographics.
Christus Southeast Texas’ Paul Trevino told the Beaumont Enterprise that the hospital experienced a decline in patient admissions, along with population shifts. In addition, the building is old, and in need of many repairs. “We thought it would be better to return it to a natural state rather than try to sell it,” St. Mary’s Ryan Miller told the Beaumont Enterprise.
At least half of the hospital’s staff are expected to lose their jobs, though the organization hopes to offer jobs to at least 75 of the 150 full- and part-time employees and 25 relief employees.
