2020 NYC Marathon Canceled Over COVID Concerns
The 2020 TCS New York City Marathon, scheduled for Nov. 1, has been canceled. Event organizer New York Road Runners (NYRR) and the de Blasio administration canceled the annual race, the world’s largest, due to coronavirus-related health and safety concerns.
The 2019 edition of the marathon hosted 53,640 finishers. The cancellation of the 2020 marathon was seen as another COVID-19-related blow to a local economy that garners hundreds of millions of dollars in economic impact from the event. The race’s only previous cancellation occurred in 2012, following Superstorm Sandy.
“While the marathon is an iconic and beloved event in our city, I applaud New York Road Runners for putting the health and safety of both spectators and runners first,” said Mayor Bill de Blasio. “We look forward to hosting the 50th running of the marathon in November of 2021.”
NYRR had previously cancelled all in-person events through August 15.
