$76M Comal County Jail Renovation Begins

Renovations have begun on the Comal County jail and sheriff’s office at South Water Lane and Interstate 35 in New Braunfels, TX, north of San Antonio. The $76 million project will convert the existing jail into 68,000 square feet of office space, and will add a new 150,000-square-foot jail building to hold 566 inmates, with possible expansion up to 900.

The current jail, which delivered in 1985, has 144 beds and holds 337 inmates. “This is a much-needed project, given the growth we’re experiencing in Comal County and in our jail population,” Sheriff Mark Reynolds said.

HDR’s Dallas Architecture studio, and Bulverde, Texas-based LMD Architects are the architects and engineers on the project. San Antonio-based Yates Construction and Sundt Construction, are jointly serving as general contractors.
