$533M Jail Complex Approved in Detroit
The Wayne County Building Authority approved a $533-million jail complex in Detroit. The site, located on East Warren Avenue near the I-75 service drive, is set to commence development by Dan Gilbert’s Rock Ventures in fall 2018.
The new jail will be funded by a $380-million county investment, with Rock Ventures covering the balance. The decision to move forward on building a new criminal justice facility will allow Rock Ventures to demolish a long-stalled jail project on Gratiot Avenue in downtown Detroit, and redevelop that site as a multi-use project.
The new justice center is anticipated to deliver in 2022. The complex will encompass 2,280 beds, 25 courtrooms, five hearing rooms, sheriff’s and prosecutor department offices, and a 160-bed juvenile detention facility.
