$40M Plan Will Convert “Blue Flame” into Affordable Housing

The former El Paso Natural Gas Building Co. in downtown El Paso, TX will have a new life as a 150-unit affordable apartment project. The Housing Authority of the City of El Paso will spend $40 million to convert the 62-year-old building at 120 N. Stanton St.

The building is known as the Blue Flame building because of a 21-foot, steel and plexiglass flame, on the roof, which was lit most of the time, but had gone dark in the late 1990s. The flame was re-lit in a recent special ceremony, and will stay lit each night until renovation begins in January 2018. It will go dark until the renovation is completed in January 2020.
