$1B Lucas Museum Coming to LA or SF?
George Lucas’ proposed Lucas Museum of Narrative Art is seeking a home. Two different concepts, each likely to exceed $1 billion to build, have been floated for sites in San Francisco and Los Angeles.
The Bay Area design features a streamlined, metallic “Star Wars” theme envisioned for a 4-acre site on the south end of Treasure Island. The roughly 270,000-square-foot building would be near a planned ferry terminal.
The Los Angeles design is more conventional, though features an elongated spaceship straddling an entry road to Exposition Park on the west side of the Coliseum. The 265,000- to 275,000-square-foot building, located on a narrow strip of land along Vermont Ave., includes subterranean parking for 1,800 cars.
The concepts were designed by Chinese architect, Ma Yansong, who is known for free-flowing sculptural drama. Lucas is expected to make a decision by early 2017.
