$100M in Upgrades for World Trade Bridge

In the aftermath of a May 2017 storm that damaged and shut down the World Trade Bridge, $100 million in funds has been earmarked to upgrade the bridge that links Laredo, TX to Nuevo Laredo in Tamaulipas, Mexico. The bridge, ranked as the third-busiest land port in the United States, was closed for several days, following a thunderstorm that caused millions of dollars of damage in Laredo.

Upgrades will include a traffic control tower and X-rays that can scan 18-wheelers while the drivers remain in their cabs. “It’s going to be a laboratory for testing a lot of new technology,” said U.S. Congressman Henry Cuellar of Laredo at a recent meeting. “No other place will have the new technology that Laredo will have. They’re going to test it there and if it works, they’ll send it everywhere else. It’s going to be a very innovative zone.”
