H-E-B Plans Driverless Vehicle Testing in San Antonio

Grocery retailer H-E-B unveiled plans to test self-driving vehicles throughout San Antonio, where it is also headquartered. The company will launch a self-driving pilot program to test delivery services near its Olmos Park H-E-B, located north of downtown San Antonio.

H-E-B will work with one Autonomous Delivery Vehicle (ADV), courtesy of Udelv, a California-based company. The Udelv ADV has climate-controlled compartments, which can carry multiple orders of fresh, frozen and dry goods, and that can travel at city street and highway speeds.

During the pilot program’s first phase, the ADV will have a driver. If the initiative is expanded, H-E-B will implement a multi-phased roll-out, so the technology has time to learn the safest and most-efficient routes. The end result is that the ADV become 100% driverless.
