Transportation Cuts Offset Warehouse Gains
Two segments of the logistics sector are traveling diverse paths. Freight couriers and cargo-handling businesses cut payrolls by 13,000 jobs last month, while jobs in warehouses and storage facilities increased by 9,400.
Over the past year, more than 70,000 jobs have been added by warehouse operators, as they beefed up to handle retailer e-commerce demand. Supply chain experts said e-commerce sales grew at three times the rate of brick and mortar sales this past holiday season.
Parcel carriers and trucking companies, which staffed up to handle the year-end busy season, are now reducing their ranks, in part as a result of tepid industrial sector demand.
Decreases in transportation hiring runs counter to overall employment numbers. Last month, the U.S. added 227,000 jobs, which was the strongest showing since September.
