Tropicana Field to get emergency $6.5M repairs

Repair Work On Tropicana Field’s Roof Underway

One of the enduring memories of Hurricane Milton is the roof getting blown off Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg. Now, the city has decided to spend tax dollars to fix it.

St. Pete City Council will spend about $6.5 million to take the first steps in salvaging what’s left of the Tampa Bay Rays’ stadium. Hennessy Construction Services Corp. and BMS CAT got the contract for emergency waterproofing services and remediation.

The city owns Tropicana Field and is required to make repairs in the event of a hurricane, per the stadium’s lease. A final damage assessment report is expected soon, but the Orlando Business Journal reports the town says work needs to be done now to prevent further damage. A simple rainstorm could cause significant adverse effects due to the lack of a drainage system.

The Rays plan to move from Tropicana Field to a new publicly-funded stadium on the same property by April 2028.
