Cities and towns across America seem willing to do almost anything to lure Amazon. They hope to become home to the new “second headquarters” planned by the technology giant. The stakes are high: Amazon plans to invest $5 billion and create 50,000 jobs in whatever place it chooses.
– Tucson, AZ, tried to mail Amazon a 21-foot cactus, as a symbol of the city’s hardy, growing economy.
– Philadelphia has enlisted hundreds of students at Wharton Business School to craft its pitch to Amazon.
– Frisco, TX has offered to build its growing city, currently only 60% built out, around Amazon.
A number of mayors have posted videos of themselves, asking Alexa, Amazon’s virtual assistant, where Amazon should build its second headquarters. In the videos, Alexa says what the mayors want to hear, answering “Danbury” or “Washington, D.C.,” depending on who she is talking to.
