Fast Food that is Literally Automated
Human service workers in the fast-food industry could lose jobs to robots and other forms of automation.
“The key question is what are humans going to do in 10 or 15 years,” said Greg Creed, CEO of Yum Brands in an interview on CNBC.
Yum owns several fast-food restaurant brands, including Pizza Hut, KFC and Taco Bell, and has already set up automated kiosks in Shanghai, China. In one case a Pizza Hut customer is greeted by a robot, he said.
There are limits to all of this. Creed doesn’t see automated systems making Taco Bell tacos to order in the near future. However, customers may be able to order fast food using kiosks relatively soon. “I don’t think it’s going to happen this year or the year after. Probably by the mid-2020s to the late 2020s, you are going to see a dramatic change,” Creed said.
