California’s quest to be a global leader in addressing climate change was enhanced by a new bill approved this week by the Assembly. The proposed legislation is envisioned to help the state achieve 100% renewable energy by 2045.
In an effort to entirely phase out fossil fuels, the bill would require 50% of the state’s energy to come from solar, wind and other renewable sources by 2026. This is four years sooner than the current law stipulates and then grants another four years to get 60% energy from renewable sources. If the state is unable to reach 100% renewable by 2045, there are no penalties.
Former Vice President Al Gore and former Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger were among the many, including celebrities, who voiced their support for the new legislation.
