Black Friday Becomes a Holiday for America’s Biggest Mall
Mall of America, the nation’s largest mall, is closing on Thanksgiving Day for the second year in a row. Even more groundbreaking is the fact that the Bloomington, MN-based mall’s management is considering Black Friday to be a “seventh holiday.”
This means that the employees who are eligible and choose to work for the mall will receive holiday pay on Friday, November 24. However, the hundreds of shops and restaurants inside the mall will choose at their own discretion whether or not to be open or closed.
Last year, the retail and entertainment destination experienced one of its most successful Black Fridays in years, and attributes its success to the emphasis it places on the day. This year, the mall will open its doors at 5 a.m., and give Mall of America gift cards valued between $10-$500 to its first 200 guests.
