Commercial real estate site Commercial Café has determined the top 40 sustainable cities in the U.S.
By measuring how much energy originates from green sources, determining the total carbon emissions and taking into account the impact of green building practices, each city was awarded points on a scale of 0-100.
Cities that don’t rely on oil, gas and coal were awarded additional points, and were penalized based on carbon dioxide emissions. Plus, the more electric vehicle charging stations available, the more points earned.
The West Coast proved to be the best coast regarding sustainability, aside from Minneapolis and Austin landing in the top 15. Both the Midwest and the South are lagging behind.
Here are the top 10 cities:
1. San Francisco, CA
2. Seattle, WA
3. Oakland, CA
4. Portland, OR
5. Boston, MA
6. Minneapolis, MN
7. Boulder, CO
8. Eugene, OR
9. Washington, D.C.
10. Hayward, CA
