North Seattle College Embarks on Affordable Housing Project
Noting a critical need for affordable housing and community gathering space, North Seattle College has selected Bellwether Housing and Chief Seattle Club to develop affordable rental housing and a longhouse on the southwest corner of its campus in Seattle’s Licton Springs neighborhood. The request for proposals follows the conclusion that educational facilities should meet foreseeable demand and remaining land on campus should be used for public benefit.
The proposed development will include 200 apartments targeting lower income families. The homes will range from studios to three bedrooms to serve a variety of household sizes.
The development will be designed with the culture and needs of Urban American Indians, Alaska Native and First Nations families in mind. The proposed 6,000-square-foot Coast Salish longhouse will provide educational space for the college, as well as space for Native cultural events and community gatherings. The project will be located near a new pedestrian and bike bridge over I-5 in Northgate, linking the college to the Northgate light rail station which is slated for completion in fall 2021.
