NYC Mayor de Blasio Sets July 1 Goal of Fully Reopening
Mayor Bill de Blasio on Thursday announced a goal of fully reopening New York City on July 1. “We are ready for stores to open, for businesses to open, offices, theaters, full strength,” de Blasio said at a news briefing.
“This is going to be the summer of New York City,” he added. “You’re going to see amazing activities, cultural activities coming back. I think people are going to flock to New York City because they want to live again.”
He said that meeting this goal would entail full vaccination citywide. “Everyone who hasn’t yet been vaccinated, come forward now,” de Blasio said.
At his daily COVID briefing later Thursday, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said he was hopeful statewide reopening soon, but added, “We’re not done with COVID yet. Yes, we’re making great progress but people are dying every day from COVID. We have to weigh those two facts.”
