First Phase of $8B LaGuardia Revamp Set to Open
Four years after then-Vice President Joe Biden famously described it as something from “a Third World country,” LaGuardia Airport is taking another step toward becoming a First World one. Eleven new gates in the Queens airport’s Terminal B will open on Saturday, representing the leading edge of an $8-billion revamp.
The new terminal B on the airport’s western side will replace one that opened more than 50 years ago, and will comprise 35 gates when completed. On the eastern side of the airport, Delta Air Lines’ $4-billion Terminal C, which broke ground in August 2017, will ultimately comprise a total 37 gates.
Delta, and a consortium known as LaGuardia Gateway Partners, are privately financing two-thirds of the redevelopment’s costs. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which operates the region’s airports, has committed the remaining one-third, mainly to overhaul and simplify the current labyrinth network of on-airport roadways.
