Taiwan-based Foxconn Technology Group has started pouring the concrete foundations for its first major manufacturing facility in Mount Pleasant, WI. Set for completion in late 2020, the nearly one-million-square-foot plant will be the first LCD screen fabrication facility of its type in North America.
“The installation of foundations and footings comes after months of careful planning and preparation, which demonstrates Foxconn’s concrete commitment to advanced manufacturing in Wisconsin,” Louis Woo, special assistant to Foxconn founder Terry Gou, told the Wisconsin Business Journal.
That commitment was in doubt earlier this year, as the company appeared to backtrack from $10-billion plans to locate manufacturing operations in the U.S. and focus instead on research and engineering work.
At present, the Gen6 facility that Foxconn plans to build is under review by the Mount Pleasant Village Board, although Wisconsin regulators gave the go-ahead for foundation work to begin.
