Lawyers in Real Estate 2020: Cox Castle’s Mathew Wyman

Mathew (Matt) Wyman is Co-Chairman of Cox, Castle & Nicholson LLP, one of the largest real estate-focused law firms in the Western U.S. with more than 130 transactional and litigation attorneys statewide. Recognized as a Best Lawyer in Real Estate Law by U.S. News & World Report since 2007, Wyman boasts more than 35 years of experience representing developers, investors, owners and operators in hundreds of joint venture and real estate transactional matters worth billions of dollars. His works spans commercial real estate product types, including residential, multifamily, retail, office, industrial and hospitality.

Wyman’s practice focuses on joint ventures, acquisitions and dispositions, entity and project level finance, merger and acquisition transactions, workouts, and entity restructuring. In the span of his nearly four-decade career, he has worked on just about every conceivable type of real estate transaction through four economic cycles, starting with the savings and loan crisis of the 1980s through today’s pandemic-driven recession. Wyman leverages his experience, his in-depth knowledge of real estate and the firm’s multidisciplinary expertise across all facets of real estate transactions and product.

The broad clientele for San Francisco-based Wyman includes some of the nation’s largest builders and developers such as Taylor Morrison, Carmel Partners, Catellus Development Corporation, KB Home, Brookfield Residential and Shea Homes. He also represents leading office development firms like Schnitzer West, retail development firms like Macerich, multi-disciplinary family-owned real estate businesses like the Watt Companies, and a variety of small entrepreneurial developers and investors.

Additionally, Wyman represents some of the largest domestic and foreign institutional investors in connection with their investment in real estate projects and companies, including Resmark Equity Partners, Institutional Housing Partners, DW Partners, Baupost Group, and Equus Capital Partners.

It’s for these reasons that we named Mathew Wyman to our inaugural grouping of Lawyers in Real Estate. These are real estate attorneys who have distinguished themselves in both their practice and the larger community.
