U. of Illinois at Chicago Moves Ahead with $115M Computer Science Building
The University of Illinois at Chicago is moving ahead with a plan to build a new computer science building costing about $115 million, despite fiscal challenges stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic, Crain’s Chicago Business reported.
Construction on the new Computer Design Research & Learning Center is scheduled to start in the spring and will double capacity for the university’s growing computer science department.
The new building will provide 135,000 square feet of classroom, lab, study, office and conference space for the department. It was approved by the University of Illinois board of trustees this past March and is expected to be completed by 2023.
Although enrollment in UIC’s computer science curriculum is expected to increase 40% by 2025, “the true bottleneck is that we don’t have any place to put faculty members,” Peter Nelson, dean of the university’s College of Engineering, told Crain’s.
