O’Hare Air Traffic Control Tower Certified LEED Gold

O’Hare International Airport’s South Air Traffic Control Tower has received LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council. Opened in 2015, the SATCT is the sixth LEED-certified facility at O’Hare and among the nation’s first air traffic control towers to receive the designation.

“O’Hare’s South Air Traffic Control Tower is central to our ongoing airfield modernization effort, dedicated to improving the safety, efficiency and connectivity of our leading global hub,” said Aviation Commissioner Jamie L. Rhee.

“With O’Hare the home of now six LEED-certified buildings and over 521,000 square feet of green roofs, more than any other airport in the world, we are proving that sustainability and growth are not mutually exclusive.”

The combination of the SATCT’s sustainable features has reduced energy usage by 25% and water usage by 40%, compared to a traditional control tower design, according to the Emanuel administration.
