Ford Motor Company has unveiled the results of its $1-billion investment at its Chicago Assembly and Stamping plants, which represent the company’s oldest continuously producing facility. The company shut down operations at the South Side facility for a month to install new technology, including two 3D printers, while also adding 500 jobs.
“In the first five days of the transformation, the team moved the scrap metal equivalent to the weight of the Eiffel Tower from the plant, making room for new equipment,” said Joe Hinrichs, Ford’s automotive president.
The upgrades and additional jobs were announced this past February. The plant has been retooled to build Ford’s all-new Explorer lineup, Police Interceptor Utility vehicles and all-new Lincoln Aviator.
Approximately 5,000 people work at Chicago Assembly Plant. Another 1,200 people work at Chicago Stamping Plant. The majority of workers at both facilities are hourly employees.
