Kaiser Permanente has decided not to move forward on a planned $900-million headquarters development in Oakland. The healthcare company planned to build a 1.6-million-square-foot office tower at 2100 Telegraph Ave., but has advised city officials it is cancelling the project.
Kaiser had intended to consolidate 7,200 employees from seven East Bay offices into a new 29-story tower. The site for the HQ, which was slated to open in 2023, was being sold by Lane Partners. Kaiser, which is Oakland’s largest private employer, indicated the change in plans was not related to COVID-19 pandemic.
Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf said in a statement, “It’s a pivot for Kaiser, and one that makes sense for their organization and members at this time. They’re reinvesting and improving their existing sites across the city, so the most important fact is that they’re staying rooted right here in Oakland. In the meantime, this is an incredible project that will attract an incredible new tenant.”
